Because of the advanced nature of the research performed at DRI, existing software and computing resources either do not exist, or are not readily available. As a consequence, DRI's researchers and scientists often develop their own software or computing systems to accomodate and support their specified research project. The two main programs dervied from this necessity to develop custom visualization and IT are DRI's ACES facility and CAVE.
The Advanced Computing in Environmental Science program (ACES) has been creating new capabilities for multidisciplinary research in Nevada, centered on computer modeling, scientific data visualization, and other data-intensive techniques in environmental research. ACES is well aligned with NSF programs in Information Technology Research (ITR) and Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure (PACI). The aim of the program is to assemble a critcal mass of expertise and equipment to create a core for future computational science advances in Nevada beyond the environmental applications.
